During a news conference and ceremony blasting President Trump’s border wall, House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., was named the “honorary president” of the Republic of Rio Grande, a short-lived country on the U.S.-Mexico border region.

The republic was an independent nation established briefly in 1840 that insurgents against the Central Mexican Republic sought to establish in northern Mexico.

The award was given by Laredo, Texas, Mayor Pete Saenz, Breitbart News reported.

“While the republic was short-lived, 10 months in all, we still have that spirit of freedom,” Saenz said.

“It’s my honor, madam speaker, to present to you the keys of our city but also to be the honorary president of the Republic of the Rio Grande.”

Pelosi responded, “I love that.”

She then joked, “Hey, we have a woman president.”

Pelosi, who has called placing a wall on the southern border “immoral,” said what is needed instead is “sophisticated scanning and detection” and other “technology” only “where deemed necessary.”

She insisted there is no crisis at the border. But Breitbart pointed to the soaring illegal immigration levels and widespread drug trafficking that leads to about 70,000 Americans dying every year from opioids.

President Trump has declared an emergency at the border to obtain funding for a wall.

“While there is no emergency at the border, it’s a mythology by the president, not the reality at the border,” Pelosi said. “And so, people have to realize that.”

She said a border wall has “no merit in terms of effectiveness” and “does not support the values of our country.”

Homeland Security data, however, indicates physical barriers reduce illegal immigration dramatically, Breitbart noted.
