Why we prep
Here’s another reason why you – and your friends and family – should prep:
“It’s not enough to be able to lie with a straight face; anybody with enough gall to raise on a busted flush can do that. The first way to lie artistically is to tell the truth – but not all of it.” – Robert A. Heinlein, “Time Enough for Love“
Demonstrating true artistry, CNN fulfilled Heinlein’s definition of the best way to lie and managed to do so using modern video editing. The Hill, being more closely tied to the written word, had to do its bald-faced best in print. But neither disinformation source should be singled out for excessive praise or condemnation; they were just utilizing the current industry “best practices.”
“The functionaries of every government have propensities to command at will the liberty and property of their constituents. There is no safe deposit for these but with the people themselves; nor can they be safe with them without information. Where the press is free, and every man able to read, all is safe.” – Thomas Jefferson (1816)
The problem is the “mainstream press” is no longer free. It’s become a vital part of the “functionaries of government.” According to Tim Groseclose, author of “Left Turn: How Liberal Media Bias Distorts the American Mind,” more than 90 percent of D.C. journalists vote Democratic, with an even higher number giving to Democrats or liberal-leaning political action committees.
“When people talk of the Freedom of Writing, Speaking, or thinking, I cannot choose but laugh. No such thing ever existed. No such thing now exists; but I hope it will exist. But it must be hundreds of years after you and I shall write and speak no more.” – John Adams, letter to Thomas Jefferson (1817)
So far things aren’t looking good for J. Adams; and as a series of polls taken by Gallup shows, the American people agree. Trust in media has dwindled from 72 percent in 1972 to 32 percent today.
The press – both free and honest – is fundamental to liberty. But as the great “de-lamination” is accelerating, and as the reds and blues become more vibrant, the existence or creation of a truly “fair and balanced” news source becomes more unlikely.
So who do you listen to? Well … everything; but with some important distinctions. Get your news from sources that revere God, family, morals and honor. They’re easy to spot. You’re reading one of the best. But don’t neglect checking out the sites that honor Satan (by denying God), dysfunctional relationships, immorality and scandal. Those dens of inequity are also important … for operational intelligence.
“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.” – Sun Tzu, “The Art Of War“
And that’s one of the reasons we prep.
Going from one type of cesspool to another, today I’m going to wrap up the conversation on prepper potties. In the first part of the series I described the imperative creation of the five-gallon prepper porta-john. The second part covered outhouses. Today we’ll look at more permanent or higher-load possibilities.
Modern sewage treatment plants are everywhere. But whether they are found in cities, towns, or your north forty, they share common traits. Here’s a very short and necessarily incomplete description of the processes found in most of these facilities from the New World Encyclopedia:
[S]ewage treatment involves three stages, called primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment. First, the solids are separated from the wastewater stream. Then, dissolved biological matter is progressively converted into a solid mass by using indigenous, water-borne micro-organisms. Finally, the biological solids are neutralized, then disposed of or re-used, and the treated water may be disinfected chemically or physically (for example by lagoons and micro-filtration). The final effluent can be discharged into a stream, river, bay, lagoon or wetland, or it can be used for the irrigation of a golf course, green way or park. If it is sufficiently clean, it can also be used for groundwater recharge or agricultural purposes.
Is prepping the right thing for to do for Christians? Or should we just be trusting in the Lord? Learn about that balance in “Be Thou Prepared” by Carl Gallups – “Equipping the Church for Persecution and Times of Trouble.”
Note that nowhere in this description do you see the word “humanure.” Humanure is the New Age term for using human-derived raw or treated residual products as a fertilizer for agricultural purposes. It’s a process that has a long history in those parts of the world where natural fertilizers from domesticated herbivores like cattle, sheep, goats or horses were in short supply, but where humans were ubiquitous. It’s still a common practice in some parts of the world today and it also has its proponents amongst some of the more extreme Gaia-types in the First World (see “The Humanure Handbook: A Guide to Composting Human Manure ” as an example.)
I’m not one of those supporters though. The dangers from inadequate or incomplete treatment of solid human waste are far too great, especially if that humanure is used on direct-to-the-table garden plants. (I’m more sanguine about professionally treated human solid waste used to fertilize livestock feed crops. There’s a pretty good filter between the grass or grain and my steak.)
But you, the land-owning prepper, don’t necessarily need to be hooked up to a commercial or municipal waste treatment plant. In fact if you live beyond the sewer lines, you likely already have your own combination primary/secondary facility in the form of a septic tank or a lagoon treatment system.
But let’s assume you just bought a piece of hinterland property and plan to develop it, either as a new permanent home or as a bug-out location. If you’re moving there full time, you’ll want to contact your local building department and get all the requirements, inspections and fees to install whatever they tell you needs to be done. On the other hand, if you plan on living there only occasionally and for some (no-doubt nefarious) reason you don’t want the local powers-that-be involved in your waste treatment plans … well, there are a lot of examples from other scofflaws out there to emulate (check the Internet). But here’s a pretty inventive one: How to Construct a Small Septic System
Note: This is likely totally illegal in your area. But it probably will work and, if the end-of-the-world zombies are out in full force, this will definitely beat the long walk to the outhouse.
Check out some options in the WND Superstore preparedness department. New products of all kinds being added regularly for all your prepper needs – from informational books, movies to shovels, water purifiers, and food from soup to nuts!
Look around online. Personal sewage treatment isn’t rocket science. Just make sure you size the tank, field, or lagoon appropriately for the number of end-users (and keep your five-gallon bucket handy in case you make a miscalculation).
So start laying out a drain field, check the local swap-and-shop for large rust-proof and water-tight containers, look for a good cheap source of perforated pipe … and get prepared.
