Amazing!
Barack Obama has defied the Constitution in dozens of ways since swearing an oath to uphold and defend it on Jan. 20, 2009 – maybe hundreds.
He has, by his own admission, exceeded his executive authority to rewrite laws, defy laws and neglect his responsibility to enforce laws.
Pledging the most "transparent administration in history," his administration has been characterized by secrecy and stonewalling.
Before his first term was even finished, it took an entire book to catalogue the "Impeachable Offenses" he had committed.
Yet, no matter what he did in his campaign pledge to work toward "the fundamental transformation of America," the Republican Congress gave him all the money he need to accomplish his objectives – even if was borrowed from future generations. The Republicans never even considered impeachment. In fact, they took if off the table early in the first term.
Yet before Donald Trump even gets the presidential nomination of the Republican Party, there are already forces in the Washington establishment – including some Republicans – talking about impeachment!
It was fully expected Democrats would go this route. In fact, Rush Limbaugh a month ago predicted the chatter would begin on Day 2 of a Trump administration.
Now Politico, the semi-official voice of the permanent Washington political establishment, reports: "Donald Trump isn't even the Republican nominee yet. But his incendiary rhetoric, most notably about killing the families of terrorists and bringing back torture, has critics on the right and the left discussing the most extreme of countermeasures at an unusually early point in the race."
"'Impeachment' is already on the lips of pundits, newspaper editorials, constitutional scholars and even a few members of Congress. From the right, Washington attorney Bruce Fein puts the odds at 50/50 that a President Trump commits impeachable offenses as president. Liberal Florida Rep. Alan Grayson says Trump's insistence on building a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border, if concrete was poured despite Congress' opposition, could lead down a path toward impeachment. Even the mainstream Republican head of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce recently tossed out the I-word when discussing the civilian backlash if Trump's trade war with China led to higher prices on everyday items sold at WalMart and Target."
See for yourself. I'm not making this up. You can't make up stuff like this.
Who's talking about impeachment more than six months prior to the election and months ahead of the convention that will nominate a Republican candidate?
Bruce Fein, Republican former Justice Department official: "What he's stated in my judgment would be clearly impeachable offenses."
Eugene Fidell, lecturer and military justice expert: "He's certainly said things, which if followed through on, would constitute high crimes and misdemeanors."
Presumably others too fearful to go on the record.
I don't doubt it for a minute.
The Washington establishment – Democrat and Republican alike – is shaken to the core by the prospect of a Trump presidency. I believe they would be just as concerned about a Cruz presidency.
Many of these establishment figures would be far more open to a Hillary presidency. She's got experience. She's part of "the club."
Do you see how it works?
The Republican establishment and the Democratic establishment have much more in common than most Americans would ever imagine. It's a mutual protection racket.
As Rush Limbaugh accurately portrays it, it's like the basketball exhibitions between the Harlem Globetrotters and the Washington Generals. The Democrats are the Globetrotters and the Republicans are the Generals. The Generals are not allowed to win games. They're supposed to be content having jobs – just getting to "compete" on the same court as the Globetrotters.
There's a lot of truth in that analogy.
The proof is now before us: Impeachment for Obama was off the table regardless of what offense he might commit. Impeachment for Trump is on the table even before he gets the nomination.
