(CHARLOTTEOBSERVER) — A shark bit a man “directly in front of the lifeguard stand” on Ocracoke Island around 12:10 p.m. Wednesday, a Hyde County news release said.
The victim was conscious and in a stable condition before he was flown to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, N.C., so he could be treated for bites on his rib cage, hip, lower leg and both hands. He is in his late 60s.
Today’s incident is the seventh shark attack in N.C. in less than a month.
The man was swimming in the National Park Service day-use area when he encountered “a grey shark, six to seven feet in length,” which pulled him underwater, the press release said.
