(Palm Beach Post) Coming into court on Friday, U.S. District Judge Kenneth Marra said he saw no reason to cut a morbidly obese criminal a break.

Like 29 others sentenced for their role in a massive pill mill operation that is blamed for more than 50 deaths, Marra said he intended to send 524-pound Steven Goodman to prison for keeping the far-flung network well stocked with powerful narcotics.

“He wouldn’t get any prison time because of his obesity? Is that fair to the others?” Marra said, describing his thoughts.

But after a more than hour-long hearing, in which a doctor predicted the 68-year-old St. Petersburg pharmacist’s myriad health problems and severe physical limitations made it unlikely he would survive long in prison, Marra relented.
