(New York Daily News) The man accused of one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history offered no hint of mental illness when he was accepted to a top graduate program at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.
James Holmes, 24, ultimately declined the offer, and this week the university released his application record - one of the few public windows into the life of the man accused of opening fire in an Aurora, Colo., movie theater last month, killing 12 people and wounding 58 others.
The University of Illinois offered Holmes a full scholarship and a $22,600 stipend in 2011 to attend their neuroscience program, with an acceptance letter reading, "Those who met you ... felt that your personal and professional qualities are truly outstanding and that you will be an excellent match for our program."
