WASHINGTON – A member of the executive committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, or PLO, has warned that the Palestinian Authority may call for a Palestinian "popular uprising" against Israeli occupation, according to a report in Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin.
The warning comes from Hana Amira, who said the decision is in response to Israel's repeated violations of bilateral agreements, particularly over the issue of continued settlement construction on the West Bank and in East Jerusalem.
The decision comes after the Israeli Ministry of Defense approved a plan to construct another 600 new homes in Shilo on the West Bank.
Sources say this is the largest settlement construction plan to be approved since Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu assumed office in March 2009. They also say that the approval retroactively allows for some 100 homes built without permits.
These sources also claim that some 500,000 Israelis now are living in more than 100 settlements built since Israel annexed the West Bank and East Jerusalem in the 1967 war.
Amira said that the PA intends to go to the United Nations Security Council on the settlement construction issue, which has had the effect of scuttling any negotiation toward a two-state solution in creating a Palestinian state.
Amira's comments follow those of PA President Mahmoud Abbas who said that he plans to make a "dramatic announcement within 10 days" following failed discussions with Israel.
Abbas also leveled the accusation that the Israelis intended to destroy the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, which is considered to be one of Islam's most holy sites. Yet, it sits on top of remains of two biblical Jewish temples.
Netanyahu has been critical of Abbas for making what he calls an "inflammatory speech" regarding the Al-Aqsa mosque.
At a recent three-day International Conference for the Defense of Occupied Jerusalem held in the Qatari capital of Doha, Abbas was particularly critical of the settlements going up in East Jerusalem and accused Tel Aviv of "changing the landscape, carrying out ethnic cleansing against Palestinians and destroying the infrastructure and economic resources" of the area.
Since last November, sources say that Israel has announced the construction of 2,057 new homes in East Jerusalem and 1,241 in the West Bank. In addition, 200,000 Israelis are said to live in a dozen settlement neighborhoods in East Jerusalem which, along with the West Bank, the Palestinians see as part of the new state of Palestine, with East Jerusalem as the capital.
This annexation never has been internationally recognized and has been the subject of recent criticism from the United States.
Amira's call for an "uprising" in Israel stems from what sources say is Israel's effort to stage what is referred to as "Judaization" of East Jerusalem through Jewish settlement construction.
